Toronto-based duo The Airplane Boys were in Ottawa for the first time last night opening up for RiFF RaFF, an American rapper/pop culture personality who stopped by Canada’s National Capital for the second time this year as part of his Neon Icon Tour.
Eventful Capital had the pleasure to attend the event in order to catch the emerging duo perform live. Ever since these talented guys released their first mixtape Where’ve You Been, partly produced by Illangelo, the mastermind behind The Weeknd’s initial sound, they’ve been garnering international recognition and support thanks to their genre-bending musical style and incredible taste in fashion.
The Airplane Boys, made up of long-time friends Beck Motley and Bon Voyage, introduced Ottawa to Beau Monde last night, a movement they’ve been building from the ground up since at least 2010. Being extremely creative and ahead of the herd, Beck Motley and Bon Voyage have consistently been releasing online material for their growing fan base, wether it be music or videos, a proof that they’re hard-working musicians out to conquer the Canadian and international scene.
The Airplane Boys hit the stage right before RiFF RaFF in an effort to warm up the crowd for what would follow. They jumped right into their set with Beau Monde (Ridin With My Crew) off of their second mixtape Alignment, an energetic opening track to get the crowd moving from the beginning. This didn’t appear to work right away however and the audience only seemed to wake up halfway through the set when Beck Motley and Bon Voyage jumped into the crowd to get the party going.
They continued with the title track from Alignment, demonstrating great on-stage presence while delivering dynamic verses. Beck Motley aka Mannie Serranilla proceeded to showing off his sick flow as he spit thoughtful yet rapid lyrics in front of an impressed crowd.
The duo followed with the newly released track Young Kings, giving the public a taste of what’s soon to come with their upcoming album LVBM . They concluded their 30-minute set with Escape, a fun and light-hearted track that’s irresistibly playful.
Although short, the set was the perfect Beau Monde introduction for Ottawa and it’s safe to say that The Airplane Boys definitely made a strong impression on Canada’s capital city.
