Wow, July is basically over…! Can you believe how fast it zoomed by? It’s the month that went by the quickest for me this year considering the amount of events I’ve been attending in and around Ottawa-Gatineau. But what a fantastic month it was!
With August just around a corner, it’s time to take a look at this week’s upcoming events, which are sure to give you great ideas if you’re looking for fun and exciting activities to partake in.
First up is the 2012 Ottawa Buskers Festival starting this Thursday, August 2 and running until Monday, August 6 along Sparks Street. This annual festival showcases some of the best buskers from around the world including local and national acts. This family-friendly event is a great way to get out (for cheap!) and support hard-working artists and their sometimes perilous acts. Fortunately, the organizers have released the day-to-day schedule just in time, therefore I’m happy to provide you with a link to the program, that you can access by clicking on the image below. Buskerfest details are also posted online on the Sparks Street Mall website here.
Also starting this week is World Press Photo 12, an exhibition which presents award-winning photos that capture moving moments taken by photographers from around the world. The exhibition takes place in the Lobby of the Canadian War Museum and is accessible free of charge starting this Friday, August 3 and until August 26. This year’s World Press Photo contains over 160 photos including some captured during recent or ongoing conflicts. For more information, simply click on the below winning-photo.
If you’re looking to party this Friday night, head over to Babylon for the monthly edition of Frenzy featuring Deebs from Toronto and Ottawa’s Iggy Smalls. Doors open at 11:00 pm and cover is the usual $5. If you want more details, you can visit the event’s Facebok page by clicking on the below poster.
Another August festival starting this week is The Rideau Canal Festival, taking place from Friday, August 3 to Monday, August 6. The fourth edition of this now-annual event, which aims to celebrate the only UNESCO World Heritage site in Ontario, will highlight the canal’s 180th anniversary with a fireworks show, with the biggest floating party and much more! You can check out the full programming by clicking on the banner below.
Kicking off this Saturday, August 4 is the 17th edition of the Grands Feux du Casino / Casino Sound of Light at Lac-Leamy in Gatineau. This annual event features four international fireworks pyromusical shows from four countries that rotate from year to year. This year’s event will highlight synchronized musical fireworks by France, Spain, the United States and China including a Grande Finale, which presents an explosive ending combining all four countries. Enjoy the beginning of August, keep soaking up the sun and make sure you hit up an event or two this week to keep up with the National Capital Region’s vibrant cultural scene 🙂 Be sure to check back in next week to find out about some of the many activities happening later on in the month!
