Another week, another round-up of noteworthy events happening in and around the National Capital Region. Take a look at Eventful Capital’s weekly picks to find out what’s happening in Ottawa-Gatineau in the days ahead.
Musician Craig Cardiff will be at the University of Ottawa this Tuesday, February 25 for a music filled evening sharing his new album Love is Louder (Than All This Noise). There will be a workshop starting at 6:00pm followed by a performance at 8:00pm. Joining Craig will be Ottawa songwriters Shawna Caspi, Carolina Hum, and Giscar. The event is being held at Huguette-Labelle Hall in the Tabaret Building.
A few weeks ago, the Ottawa International Film Festival challenged Ottawans to produce a short film under 72 hours. The Top 10 films who made the cut will be presented at the OIFF72 Awards Ceremony this Wednesday, February 26 at the Mercury Lounge and 4 of them will be awarded. For the occasion, Mayor Jim Watson will be giving opening words, there will be a special performance by local indie folk singer Her Harbour and guests will receive a welcome cocktail courtesy of Beam Global Spirits & Wine.
Over at Raw Sugar Cafe this Wednesday, Ottawa-based folk musician Justice R.F. will be performing live. He’ll be joined by rock n’ roll band Run Coyote for an intimate night of music.
If you’re a fan of bowling, head over to West Park Bowling Lanes for Ferris Bowler’s Night Off. Organized by Beau’s, the 80s-themed event will include prizes to be won and live music courtesy of DJ Atherton. Sign-up to participate by emailing chris.rayburn@beaus.ca
The Up & Up Concert Series presents Mehdi Cayenne Club at the Mercury Lounge this Thursday, February 27. The Ottawa-based post-rock pop trio, who’s gaining recognition across Quebec and Ontario thanks in part to Contact Ontarois & TFO’s BRBR, will be performing live starting at around 9:30 pm.
The Doldrums Winter Music Festival is being held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Pressed and Cafe Dekcuf. For the occasion a slew of local bands and musicians playing different genres will be giving live performances namely Cold Capital, Those Gulls, Keturah Johnson and Amalgamation.
Over in Gatineau, the 35th edition of the Salon du Livre de l’Outaouais will be taking place at the Congress Centre from Thursday, February 27 to Sunday, March 2. The perfect place for francophone book worms, this annual festival gathers many publishers under one roof and features conferences, presentations, book signing opportunities and more.
This Friday night, Carnaval 2014 “A Taste of Brazil” is happening at Club Caliente. The event will feature live samba and capoeira performances along with a set by musical guests Florquestra Brasil. DJs will be playing the best of carnaval music that’s guaranteed to make you dance.
Michigan post-hardcore band Chiodos will be live at Ritual this Friday, February 28. For the occasion, they’ll be joined on stage by Ottawa progressive-metal/hardcore band We Were the Fires of Rome, Ottawa pop-punk/hardcore group Rydell and Ottawa post-hardcore/metalcore project Colour Me Crimson.
Also this Friday night, The Jerry Cans from Iqaluit, Nunavut will be live in concert at Zaphods. This Canadian 5-piece, who mixes country swing, throat singing, reggae, and blues, will be performing in Ottawa with special musical guest Saali, an Inuk singer/songwriter based out of Montreal. What’s more, a lucky concert-goer will win a return flight from Ottawa to Iqaluit for two courtesy of First Air.
If you want to listen to some live indie music this Friday, The Cafe Alt Concert Series and CHUO present performances by Camp Radio, King’s Quest and Baberaham Lincoln. The show is happening at Cafe Alt on the University of Ottawa campus. One year ago the Wonder Geeks Activate! team joined with the common goal to unify geek culture and nightlife into one. A year later, Wonder Geeks Activate! celebrates at the Mercury Lounge with a festive evening filled with art, live music, games and prizes.
If you’re into dubstep and drum n’ bass, you’ll want to hit up the Rough Shoppe party this Friday night at the Montgomery Legion on Kent Street. The event will feature 2 rooms of DJs to satisfy your bass thirst including Dave Dialect, Kid Kleaver, Disco-Nekt and Mugzy among others.
The February edition of Party Pack is going down at Ritual this Friday, February 28. For the occasion, Good Problems teamed up with Straight Goods to present special guest DA-P. The Montreal producer affiliated to Soulection will be giving a live set with local support from DJs Iggy Smalls, Laocapone and Foster.
At Le Troquet in the Hull sector of Gatineau this Friday, there will be a night of music with Ottawa’s Bonnie Doon, Notta Comet and Girl Arm of Montreal. Check it out if you’re looking for something different.
The Restructured Records Label Night is being held at the Mercury Lounge this Friday, February 28. The night will feature live sets by special guest DJs Greg Gow from Toronto, Teknobrat of the Nu Planet Rave Radio Show CKCU 93.1 FM , and Andrew O’Malley of The Latest Artists.
30 Artists, 1 Lounge/Ambiance DJ, 4 Live Music & Dance Acts , over 100 Master Pieces for display and sale, Limited Editions from Photography, Fine Art, Jewelry, Digital Prints, and Sculptures: that’s what you can expect from the Music and Art Expo taking place at Era this Saturday, March 1. If you want to listen to some live music this Saturday, head to the Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield to check out Sound of Lions. The five-piece female-fronted hip-hop/rock/soul group from Ottawa will be sharing the stage with special guests Flying Hórses, who’ll take you on an instrumental journey through childhood memories of summer carnivals, dusty dollhouses and wide-eyed innocence.
This Saturday, March 1st at Mugshots, be sure to check out Organ Eyes if you enjoy garage pop/psychedelic rock. The Ottawa band will be performing live inside the Old Jail Hostel alongside Trade Secrets of Montreal and Pith and the Parenchymas who are also of Ottawa.
Kiyomi Valentine of Hunter Valentine will be giving an acoustic solo set at Raw Sugar Cafe this Saturday night. The Toronto/Brooklyn rocker will be performing live with local group The Ecstatic, who’ll also be doing an acoustic set for the occasion.
In the Hull sector of Gatineau, the 44 Wright Collective presents “N’habite plus à l’adresse indiquée”, a multidisciplinary and interactive art exhibition launching this Sunday, March 2. The exhibition will feature work by Jean-François Dallaire, Gabriel Tétreault, Stéphanie St-Jean Aubre, Hugo Gaudet-Dion, Jean-François Séguin, Marc-André Bourgon, Mawt Trood and Jean-François Henri. The vernissage will be held from 5 to 7pm at the Espace René-Provost.
