Bye August 2016, it’s been real. On to September, which is still technically summer. Here’s what’s up over the next seven days in and around Ottawa-Gatineau. Get out there and enjoy all the fun stuff happening this week!
Saint John and Fredericton garage bands Motherhood and Little You Little Me are touring across Canada together and they’re making a stop in Ottawa this Tuesday night. They’ll be playing live at House of Targ alongside Ottawa garage rock band Mushy Gushy and Ottawa ouija rock group The Yips.
Over at Kinki this Tuesday, Barristers is holding a special edition featuring a Top of the World x HUF x Chocolate Skateboards pop-up shop. Shop around while you listen to hip hop selections courtesy of resident DJ Jon Deck and DJ Laocapone. For the occasion, Vancouver DJ Nick Bike will be giving a live set as well.
The 29th annual Hot Air Balloon Festival is once again being held at Bay Park in Gatineau and this year it’s happening over 5 days from September 1-5. This annual event, which celebrates hot air balloons of different colours, shapes and sizes, also offers a slew of on-site activities for everyone including shows, a classic car exhibition, buskers, fireworks and an amusement park.
On September 1, the DAÏMÔN artistic centre invites you to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The event will be an opportunity for members and friends to meet new people, see familiar faces and renew ties with all those who have contributed to the organization’s growth over the years. The evening will feature the launch of “PRÉSENCES” a major outdoor exhibition presented in the streets of Vieux-Hull this fall that will feature works created by 30 artists members of DAÏMÔN over the past 30 years.
Over at Targ this Thursday night, you can catch Montreal genre-bending party punks Vulgaire who’ll be playing live alongside French punk rock band Putavelo and Ottawa glam rock faves In Heat. Plus, don’t forget there’s always delicious perogies, entertaining pinball games and refreshing beverages at House of Targ.
If you’re looking for an intimate show to check out on Friday night, make your way over to Pressed Cafe. There’s going to be a night of live music featuring Ottawa folk rock band Black Dogs, Ottawa musicians Paul Ross & Friends and Toronto folk singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Kruchak.
If you’re looking for heavier music to kick off your long weekend, don’t miss The Night of the Witch at House of Targ this Friday night. The bill will feature Montreal doom metal band Cauchemar, Ottawa black thrash metal group Occult Burial and Quebec City instrumental doom rockers The Death Wheeler, who’ll be giving their first live show in Ottawa.
This Friday, September 2, Our House is back at the Mercury Lounge beat kitchen, and time around, the good people at Floorplay Group are spicing things up with Toronto guest DJ Jonathan Rosa. Rosa will be sharing the chef’s hat with resident DJ Ryan Labelle for a night of cutting edge house music.
Every time Québec Redneck Bluegrass Project make an appearance in the region, they end up giving crazy shows that turn into solid parties. This Saturday promises to be no different as the folk/rock/bluegrass/punk hillbillies take over the Minotaure for what’s sure to be a rocking good night.
Want to rock out to some punk this Saturday night? Then do yourself a favour and make your way over to the Dom to check out Hamilton punk rippers Flesh Rag, Montreal hardcore band F.I.T.S. and Ottawa franco punks Durs Coeurs.
There’s a great lineup of bands you should catch this Saturday at House of Targ. Sudbury garage pop rock band The Almighty Rhombus will be in town to play live with Ottawa alternative garage rockers Elementals, Ottawa lo-fi psych surf rock project Blve Hills, and Ottawa garage rock outfit Average Times. It’s bound to be lots of fun!
Rescheduled because of rain, the Studio Fundraiser for Interval House Block Party is now being held this Sunday on Bank St in the Glebe and all proceeds will go directly to Interval House of Ottawa, a local women’s shelter. The fundraiser will include a Makers Market, live music, face painting, a BBQ, live art and hair cuts, braids and hair tattoos by donation from Studio B stylists.
Looking for a fun beach party in the city on a Sunday? Look no further than Pozativ Vibrationz By Da Beach, a family-friendly outdoor event happening at Petrie Island this Sunday, September 4. This is the final edition of the summer so it’s your last chance to attend this free jam by the beach featuring top notch DJs, tasty eats & refreshing beverages provided by Banana’s Beach Grill & Rum Shack.
Riverside is back for a 4th year this Sunday, September 4 outside the Canadian Museum of History in the Vieux-Hull sector of Gatineau, just across the bridge from downtown Ottawa. This year’s edition will feature live electronic dance music courtesy of guest DJs Borgeous, Quintino, and Dallas K along with a few others.
This week is the Labour Day long weekend, so if you’re looking for a club party to hit up on Sunday, look no further than City for the Rewind Sundays party featuring DJ Magnificent, who’s guaranteed to get the club bumping by playing a mix of old school hip hop and r&b and new club anthems and bangers.
