Art Battle is back for another season! If you enjoy visual arts, start your week at the Ottawa chapter of Art Battle this Tuesday night over at Arts Court. The unique event organized across Canadian cities, brings 12 local painters together for a live painting competition held in front of an audience.
If you’re into metal, don’t miss East Coast death trashers Dischord live at Avant-Garde this Tuesday, August 29. This time around, the band will be sharing the stage with Ottawa death metal project Messora and Ottawa metal group Volatile.
If punk is more your thing, you can catch Vancouver punks Alien Boys in Ottawa this Wednesday night. The guys who are on a cross-country tour will be rocking out at an undisclosed location with Ottawa’s L’Animal Mechant and and Omerta. Want to go? Ask a punk for the address.
This Wednesday, August 30, there’s a Chris Cornell Tribute night happening at House of Targ, which also happens to be a benefit show for suicide prevention. Local musicians from The Red Rails, A Darker Day, Defined, Black Oak Decline, Merdarahta, Rydell, Old Rules, Wild Love, and The Wicked Mercy will be playing songs by Chris Cornell, and there will be visuals by Hard Science. Funds raised from the event will go support to the Ottawa Distress Centre.
This Thursday at Live on Elgin, there’s a poetry night going down called Tell Em Girl! The powerful spoken word showcase will feature a lineup of young women who’s words of truth, wisdom, confidence, and power will leave you standing at your feet.
Montreal dark pop/punk band Hoan will be playing live at Bar Robo this Thursday, August 31 and for the occasion, they’ll be sharing the stage with Ottawa pscyh pop group Organ Eyes.
Ottawa indie post rockers No Mistakes in Space are putting out their first EP and they’ll be celebrate the release this Thursday night at House of Targ. To add to the festivities, they’ll be sharing the stage with BC dream pop/ art rock band Douse, Ottawa indie rock group The Haig and Ottawa dream/pop project Sparklesaurus.
Over at The Brass Monkey this Thursday, August 31, there’s a live show featuring Little Rock doom/metal/rock band Pallbearer. The Profound Lore Recs signees will be rocking alongside Brooklyn experimental project Kayo Dot and North Carolina rockers Bask.
Philly underground hip hop duo Jedi Mind Tricks will be performing live at Barrymore’s this Thursday, August 31 as part of their A Blaze In The Northern Sky Tour. The pioneers who are considered veterans of the American rap scene, will be sharing the stage with Ottawa hip hop heavyweights Flight Distance, Ottawa artist Kenny Kingcon and Prehistoric.
The 30th Hot Air Balloon Festival is being held at Bay Park in Gatineau and this year it’s happening from August 31 to September 4. This annual event, which celebrates hot air balloons of different colours, shapes and sizes, also offers a slew of on-site activities for everyone including music shows, a classic car exhibition, buskers, fireworks and an amusement park, among other things.
Swedish metal band Marduk will be making a stop in Ottawa this Friday, September 1 to play Mavericks. American death metal group Incantation, American death/thrash metal Abysmal Dawn, Ottawa death metal formation Accursed Spawn and Ottawa blackened death metal project Dissentient will also be a part of the show.
Halifax power pop/punk rock band Outtacontroller are back in Ottawa this Friday night and this time around, they’ll be hitting up the Dom with Toronto punks First Base and Ottawa punk rockers NECK. Gotta love hand-drawn show posters!
This Friday, the Ready Steady Go Mod Nite is going down at House of Targ. DJ Emmett will host a night of live music followed by a swinging 60s dance party, which will feature live performances by a David Bowie tribute band and more.
This Friday night, there’s a new monthly dance party making its debut at Babylon. Dubbed Gettin’ Jiggy for the Weeknd, the new event is a 2000s hip hop dance party and tribute to The Weeknd, and it all goes down with DJs RayRay and Illo.
Anyone up for a night of doom? If so, Montreal occult doom two-piece Nightwitches will be playing live at Black Squirrel Books this Saturday, September 2. Joining them for the show will be Montreal doom newcomers Strega and Ottawa stoner rock band Grimm.
Kingston, Jamaica’s Elephant Man will be touching down at St. Joseph Hall to perform live in Ottawa as part of the reggae festival. The internationally renowned dancehall artist will be sharing the stage with Mysta, Jahiant, Hotta, Alton Willis and more.
This Saturday over at the Mercury Lounge, Ottawa based artist Dixon (Juan Carlos Noria) and William Daniel Buller will be installing live art at the club while DJ Trevor Walker spins the tunes. All that accompanied by the visuals of Matt Cameron.
Riverside is back for a 5th year in a row this Sunday, September 3 outside the Canadian Museum of History in the Vieux-Hull sector of Gatineau, just across the bridge from downtown Ottawa. The 2017 edition will feature live electronic dance music courtesy of guest DJs BlasterJaxx, Zomboy and Ghastly, along with a few others.
