The Ottawa premiere of Filmage: The Story of Descendents/ALL is being presented at the Mayfair Theatre this Monday, January 20 and Tuesday, January 21. Directed by Deedle Lacour and Matt Riggle, this music documentary follows Descendents band leader/drummer/square-peg Bill Stevenson in his quest to achieve “ALL”, his philosophy of going for greatness at all costs.
Over on the Gatineau side, the Brasseurs du Temps present Michel Robichaud live in concert. The singer-songwriter and guitarist from Sainte-Adèle, Quebec, who’s in the process of recording his first studio album, will be performing live in an effort to gain new fans of his acoustic pop-folk sound. The Brasseurs du Temps offer a dinner-show combo, but you can also choose to attend solely for the music.
There’s a new singer-songwriter showcase series kicking off at the Rainbow Bistro this Tuesday, January 21. Called Songsters’ the first instalment will feature live music by Basil Park, Syd Perry and Social Butterfly. For more details, click on the event poster below.
On Tuesday, January 21, Thomas Gold will be bringing his New Year Tour to Ottawa with a live DJ set at Era. This special edition of Privé will feature the electro tech-house producer from Berlin alongside opening guest Ariyan.
If you’re into rap, trap, and r&b, head over to Babylon this Thursday, January 23 for the second edition of Faded with DJ So Nice, Max Zims and special guest Foster playing your favourite joints.
If photography is your thing, be sure to check out Zachary Pantalone’s “Still Life” solo exhibition at the School of Photographic Arts of Ottawa (SPAO). Presented for 2 weeks only, the vernissage is being held this Friday, January 24 inside the Redwall Gallery.
The Urban Legends Poetry Slam is happening this Friday, January 24 at Carleton University. This week’s slam will feature guest poet Daniel Mark Patterson, also known as DMP in the poetry world. This “Heartbreak Poet”, known for his intensely honest and personal pieces, will be the special feature for this edition of Urban Legends. Regardless of your background, he’s sure to strike a cord within you.
The first Nature Nocturne of 2014 is taking place this Friday, January 24 at the Canadian Museum of Nature. This edition, titled “Horsing Around” in honour of the Year of the Horse, will feature DJ Sash and DJ Biggs incorporating contemporary Chinese Pop into their house music set. Ottawa-based Wide Angle Recordings will also present Cityscape Sessions Live with Blake Sutherland, Return of the Jaded and guests bringing you stunning visuals and cutting edge house music.
Ottawa-based five-piece Autumns Cannon will be performing live at Mavericks this Friday, January 24. The roots rock band will be playing alongside opening acts Still Winter Hills and High Waters in an effort to promote their debut album Open Letter. What’s more, they’ll soon be embarking on a Canadian tour with the Goo Goo Dolls.
Starting this Friday, Cafe Alt and CHUO Present: Concert Series 2014. The first instalment of this new series will feature live performances by Freelove Fenner of Montreal, Grime Kings of Ottawa/Bellevill and Big Knife Little Knife also of Montreal.
Toronto’s SmashMouth Music Group presents the SmashMouth Mentality Showcase this Friday at Ritual. If you’re into new Canadian hip-hop, be sure to head over there to get familiar with The Antiheroes, DillanPonders, Jimmy B, SeT, theO and other special guests .
This Saturday, January 25, SAW Video presents “Make Your Own Damn Movie!”, a special interactive workshop with Lloyd Kaufman, creator of The Toxic Avenger & co-founder of Troma Entertainment. This crash course on film making is perfect for anyone who’s ever wanted to make movies but doesn’t have the money to do so. There is a limited capacity so be sure to register in advance if you plan on attending.
Are you a fan of Daft Punk? If you answer yes, then be sure to make your way to Mavericks this Saturday, January 25 to check out the Daft Punk Tribute, an 8-piece band with a full horn section interpreting some of Daft Punk’s greatest hits live. Hailing from Toronto, these talented musicians sure know how to get the crowd singing and dancing. The DPT are no strangers to Ottawa, having performed in the National Capital several times before. This has nothing to do with One More Time: A Tribue to Daft Punk. It’s so much better and a guaranteed good time!
If you’re looking for something more low-key, head over to the Lunenburg Pub this Saturday for a night of live music. For the occasion, the Arrows & Anchors folk duo will be performing live alongside local alternative folk musician Justice R.F. and Seb Ciel.
