Another blog post, another week filled with events to keep the national capital region’s cultural scene buzzing. If you’re in Ottawa-Gatineau this week and have time to check out things, there’s plenty of stuff happening, so take a look at Eventful Capital’s weekly picks below for a glimpse into the number of events being held in the coming days.
Max & Igor Cavalera will be making a stop in Ottawa this Monday, October 10 as part of their Return to Roots 20th Anniversary Tour. The group will be playing Roots in its entirety and they’ll be sharing the stage with Montreal extreme tech death metal group Cryptopsy, American melodic metal band Allegaeon and Cayman Islands progressive metal outfit ONI.
Also this Monday, Ottawa Showbox presents Halifax experimental pop group Mauno who’ll be playing live at Bar Robo as part of their Canadian tour. The band will be joined on stage by Ottawa garage rockers Telecomo and Ottawa experimental project Shoe Blog.
Charlottetown indie pop four-piece Paper Lions will be performing live at Zaphods this Wednesday, October 12 in an effort to promote their latest album Full Colour. For the occasion, the band will be giving a show alongside Wakefield indie rockers Rebelle and Ottawa synthpop project Townes.
Toronto noise pop/psych punks Peeling will be making a stop in Ottawa this Wednesday night and they’ll be playing live at House of Targ with Ottawa dark folk/soul outfit The Heavy Medicine Band and Ottawa lofi pop/folk band Fire Antlers.
If you feel like checking out an intimate punk show this Thursday night, make your way over to Pressed Cafe to catch Ottawa hardcore punks Pistols at Dawn who’ll be rocking out with Toronto melodic punk band Serenity Now, Toronto emo group Reminder and Ottawa skate punks The Valveenus.
The October edition of Switched On Synths is going down at House of Targ this Thursday night. The electronic music series dedicated to all things synth will feature a set by Tawainese synth pop group Colour Domes, Moncton experimental techno project Paranerd, Moncton lofi dark techno project Anome and Ottawa live techno punk artist Ruth Grader.
This Friday, October 14, 10 artists are uniting to fight breast cancer at the 10th annual Babes4Breasts benefit concert and CD release. With a solid lineup of Canadian groups and musicians performing live, this is sure to be a great show for an even greater cause.
American rap group LaCoka Nostra will be giving a live show inside The Bourbon Room this Friday night. Members Ill Bill, Danny Boy (from House of Pain), Slaine and DJ Eclipse will be sharing the stage with Marico The Shogun, Swift Crew, Frank Blak and others.
This Friday, October 14, the National Arts Centre invites you to join Classical Collisions, a party they curated alongside House of PainT that’s sure to get you moving. Canadian DJ legend Skratch Bastid will be in the house dropping a turntable/classical set as a tribute to Beethoven and Schumann, local graffiti artists will be on hand creating colour works and there will be an interactive mural on which you’ll be able to express yourselves too. Sounds fun!
If unusual sweaters, Dollar Store theatrics, and mildly catchy tunes sound like something that’s up your alley, be sure to head to House of Targ this Friday night to catch BA Johnston live. The Ontario-based musician will be returning to the national capital and this time around he’ll perform alongside Ottawa indie pop punks Dead Weights, Ottawa grunge pop band Coccinella and Ottawa artirst Robots Everywhere!!
Music.Art.Ppl is teaming up with dynamic visual arts duo Dems & Doll for a special event dubbed Coastal Carnival that’s happening at PLURR this Friday night. The unique event will feature music selected by five different DJs, as well as art showcases, tarot card readings, a chill lounge and a Festival Flea booth.
Ottawa-based alt-country folk project Graven & The Dirty Hustle will be giving a live show at Irene’s Pub this Friday night. For the occasion, the Canadiana folk rockers will be sharing the stage with local alternative folk rock singer-songwriter and musician Cody Allen.
Bangarang is back at an all new location! If you love the sound of Studio One and Trojan Records, then this night happening at Ward 14 with DJs Magnificent and Longshot is for you. The focus is on early reggae, rocksteady and ska from Jamaica’s exciting 1966-1975 period with a heavy focus on 1968-1971.
Zackfest is being held this Saturday, October 15 at the Stittsville Legion and all proceeds raised from the one-day festival will go towards the Zack Noureddine Foundation. The event has a packed bill and will feature live performances by I Call This Safety, The Adding Machine, We Were Sharks, Rydell, Sparrows, Mayfield, Halfsleeper, Old Rules, Bearings, Safekeeping, Remember The Arcadians, The Superlative and several others.
Over at Bar Robo this Saturday night, you can check out Ontario spaghetti western rock n’rollers Run Coyote who’ll be back in town to give a show with Ottawa/Montreal psych pop band Future States and pop project Pallice.
Ottawa indie rock/soul/electronic band High Waters will be making a return to the Blacksheep Inn in beautiful Wakefield this weekend. The four-piece, who released their debut album Goodnight Mara in September 2015, will be performing live with indie folk/soul newcomers Limestone Chorus and Ottawa indie rock quintet Lost to the River.
Local soul/blues powerhouse Bella Cat will be giving a show at Live on Elgin this Saturday, October 15. The Wakefield-based singer-songwriter will be joined by Nile Groove and there will be an opening set by Roxanne Rhythms.
Hometown faves The Souljazz Orchestra are performing live at Babylon this Saturday, October 15 after touring overseas all summer. The Ottawa-based six-piece, known for its contagious soul, jazz and afro-latin sounds, will be joined by DJ Zattar on the wheels of steel. If you haven’t been to a Souljazz show before, you’re in for a treat, it’s always a guaranteed good time! I’ve you’ve been, you know the drill.
