The University of Ottawa is putting on an Emerging Music Festival to celebrate the end of the semester and it’s all happening at Cafe Nostalgica over 3 days. The shows, which are open to both students and the general public, will feature Les Hay Babies, Fanny Bloom and Gazoline.
Are you, or someone you know, a true baseball fan? If so, you’ll be happy to know that Pitck Talks is returning to Ottawa this Thursday, March 24 at the legendary Zaphod Beeblebrox for a night of interactive engaging talks about Major League Baseball. It’ll be the ultimate meet-up of baseball fans, featuring Jamie Campbell, Tao of Stieb, Richard Griffin, Ben Hodge and Arden Zwelling.
If you’re into hardcore, emo and pop punk, check out In Too Deep at Cafe Dekcuf this Thursday, March 24. The night of live music will include live sets by Ottawa bands Halfsleeper, Safekeeping and Slip.
Hometown faves The Souljazz Orchestra are performing live at Babylon this Thursday, March 24 for the Easter weekend shakedown. The Ottawa-based six-piece, known for its contagious soul, jazz and afro-latin sounds, will be joined by DJ Magnificent on the wheels of steel. If you haven’t been to a Souljazz show before, you’re in for a treat, it’s always a guaranteed good time!
The March edition of Hip Hop Karaoke is going down this Friday night at the Elmdale with resident hosts DJ So Nice and Atherton. If you want to perform and impersonate your fave hip hop artist by doing that track you spent hours memorizing in front of the mirror, now’s your chance to show Ottawa what you’re made of.
This Friday, March 25, the Babely Shades collective presents the launch of a new monthly series Space Jam over at Pressed Cafe. The show will feature performances by Montreal psych pop project November, Pith of Ottawa spooky folk pop band Pith and the Parenchymas and Peterborough experimental noise band Perkolator.
Vancouver indie pop band The Zolas are making a return to Ottawa this Friday, March 25 in an effort to promote their new album “Swooner”. This time around, the group will be performing at Zaphods and sharing the stage with Toronto indie formation Grounders and Ottawa alternative rockers Moroccan Sun.
For those of you who are into heavier music, you may want to make your way over to House of Targ on Friday to check out Brampton progressive rock/speed metal group Droid, Pembroke metal/hardcore punk band Flying Fortress, and Montreal metal project Canceric.
This Friday night at The Cabin, there’s going to be a live hip hop cypher that’ll feature local emcees Adub, Cashtro Crosby, Jcapcity and Moun Fou spitting in front of a live audience and the event will be professionally filmed.
At the good old Avant-Garde Bar this Friday night, you can check out a show featuring live music by Toronto garage surf 4-piece OL’CD, Ottawa-based punk rock band The Tenenbaums and Montreal lo-fi garage group Double Date With Death.
Montreal hip hop trio The Posterz are coming back to Ottawa this Friday night and they’ll be performing live at Ritual with special guests Black Iri$h and KingsCollege. Last time they performed in Ottawa (at Overkill) it was sort of shitty though, so hopefully they make up for it this time around and give a good show.
Double Barrel, one of Ottawa’s most popular monthly dance parties, is going down inside Mercury Lounge this Friday night. Resident DJ Magnificent will be gracing the 1s and 2s as he does best and this time around he’ll be joined by his longtime friend and sidekick DJ RayRay, who’s the special guest this month. An all-vinyl funk, soul, Motown and vintage reggae dance party you don’t want to miss! This is bound to be nothing short of amazing, trust me on this.
Montreal experimental electronic band Saxsyndrum is returning to Ottawa this Friday, March 25 after having performed at this year’s Megaphono festival. The excellent drum and sax duo will be sharing the spotlight at Flapjack’s with Montreal dream pop project Smileswithteeth, Ottawa bedroom r&b artist Pipahauntas and Ottawa electronic DJ and producer Frayd.
This Saturday at Origin Studio 57, there’s the 1NIGHT event, which invites attendees to learn the art & the artist. The event, which is a live talk show that aims to highlight the work of performance-based artists from across Canada, is hosted by JustJamaal ThePoet, and offers an artistic platform at which every special guest engages the audience with their thoughts on their discipline, experience and passion for creativity. This third instalment will feature artist Malik Alnasir live in the studio.
The third annual Indigenius Art, Music and Fashion Show is being held this Saturday, March 26 at Centrepointe Theatre. Encourage youth talent and help raise funds for a good cause at the same time as part of the proceeds with be going towards a scholarship fund for the Urban Aboriginal High School graduates to help them transition to college and university.
If you’re into visual arts, especially painting, check out the monthly Art Battle, a unique concept organized across Canadian cities which brings 12 local painters together for a live painting competition. The event is taking place this Saturday evening at Arts Court and an annual National tournament will eventually take place in the summer to crown the top Canadian painter of 2016. This year, there’s also going to be an international edition.
At Kinki Lounge this Saturday night, there’s a very special benefit event in recognition of International Women’s Day organized in support of Harmony House. The event will feature tasty food and beverages, a raffle, music by DJs Kitty Funk & Jas Nasty, and a unique fashion show curated by some Ottawa vintage vendors. Celebrating the eras from the 50s through 90s with this dynamic evening that brings fashion, food, dance, art and music together all for a good cause.
Another fundraiser happening this Saturday, this one for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada and For Pivot’s Sake, is being held at Zaphods. This event will feature a live show with Ottawa punk/rock/garage bands The Flatliners, Audio Visceral and HellBros.
Local experimental art punk band FET.NAT will be releasing a new EP this Saturday night with an album launch show taking place at Le Temporaire in the Hull sector of Gatineau. For the occasion, the group will be joined on stage by Montreal pizza punk group Crabe and Ottawa surf punk band Bonnie Doon.
If you’re looking to boogie down to disco this weekend, head over to the Mercury Lounge this Saturday night for the Disco Lab party featuring mad scientists Trevor Walker and Lance Baptiste who’ll be taking care of the beats. If you attend, your encouraged to dress in disco-inspired attire.
An entire night dedicated to the 6 God? Drake fans rejoice, you read correct. The fourth edition of this popular dance party, at which you can expect to hear nothing but Drizzy jams and tracks from OVO affiliates, is going down this Saturday night inside Babylon.
At the Troquet in the Vieux-Hull sector of Gatineau, there’s going to be a dub/reggae/roots dubstep/ragga jungle night this Saturday. Calld Dubwise, the free event will feature music by Sarge, Disco-Nekt, Mr. Caffrey and DJ Daisy.
It’s already been a year of Sunday Sessions at the Mercury Lounge this Sunday, March 27 and since most people aren’t working the next day, it’s a good opportunity to check this party out if you haven’t already. To celebrate the 1st anniversary, there will be sets by a bunch of DJs including Paolo Rocco, Return Of The Jaded, Rick Laplante, Sergio Pari, and Tone A.
