Yes you’re reading this right, it’s Mac N’ Cheese Week over at Flapjack’s and for the occasion, they’re celebrating this cheesy goodness of a meal with all sorts of inclinations. If you’re into visual arts you should check out the monthly Art Battle, a unique concept organized across Canadian cities which brings 12 local painters together for a live painting competition. The event is taking place this Tuesday evening at Arts Court and an annual National Championship will eventually take place in the summer to crown the top Canadian painter of the year. This year, there’s even going to be an international edition!
Canadian rap veteran Madchild will be making a return to Ottawa this Thursday night as part of his Night Time Kill Tour. This time around, the Swollen Members hip hop artist from BC will beperforming live at Babylon and sharing the stage with special guests Prehistoric, Proper T and Drae among others.
Are you, or someone you know, a true baseball fan? If so, you’ll be happy to know that Pitck Talks is coming to Ottawa this Friday, January 22 at the legendary Zaphod Beeblebrox for a night of interactive engaging talks about Major League Baseball. It’ll be the ultimate meetup of baseball fans, featuring Mike Wilner, Tao of Stieb, Brendan Kennedy, and more guests TBA. Plus, tickets also include a voucher for free admission to an Ottawa Champions game next season.
This Friday, January 22 at Flapjacks, spoken word poetry and pancakes collide in a match made in heaven. The event will feature a multigenerational lineup consisting of artists Jamaal Jackson Rogers, King Kimbit, Barâa Arar, John Andrew Akpata, and Khaleefa ApollotheChild Jubber.
The Ottawa Asian Festival’s Night Market is back for a Winter edition this weekend at the Hilton Lac Leamy. This foodie event will feature the best in Asian cuisine and allow attendees to enjoy classic and creative cuisine from some of the best chefs from around Ontario. There will be lots of vendors and hundreds of delicious dishes to choose from as well as entertainment and performances. Come hungry!
This Friday, January 22, the Ottawa New Music Creators present a night of improvisations at the Gallery Recording Studio. The night of live music will feature performances by Pierre-Yves Martel on viola da gamba and Ben Grossman on hurdy gurdy. From medieval music and Swedish folk to musique actuelle and electroacoustics, this will be a rare convergence of two virtuoso musicians creating new sounds with ancient instruments in a fully improvisatory context.
Hip hop heads will be happy to know that legendary rappers Onyx and N.O.R.E. (of Capone & Noreaga) will be performing live at Ritual this Friday night. The American hip hop artists will be headlining the show and sharing the stage with local guests Alex Lost, Eddie Quotez and Bvstvrds among others.
Toronto power pop/punk rockers Little Junior will be performing live at House of Targ this Friday night. The band will be joined on stage by Ottawa lo-fi indie shoegaze rock group Kings Quest, post-grunge/psych/garage noise pop project Lush Buffalo and rock n’ rollers Tijuana Jesus.
Over at Black Squirrel Books this Friday night, there’s going to be an all-ages live music show brought to you by Ottawa Showbox featuring sets by Montreal punks Five Eyes and Ottawa post-punk band The Young Offenders.
Local power folk band Steamers will be giving an acoustic set at the Record Centre this Saturday afternoon. It’s all-ages free event and the Steamers are always fun live as they bring tons of energy to the stage.
This Saturday night at the new Origin Studio 57, there’s a new event launching that brings together, art, community and entertainment. Dubbed 1NIGHT : Learn the Art & the Artist, the event is a live talk show that aims to highlight the work of performance-based artists from across Canada. Hosted by JustJamaal ThePoet, 1NIGHT is an artistic platform at which every special guest engages the audience with their thoughts on their discipline, experience and passion for creativity. This first instalment will feature artist Prufrock live in the studio. Sounds different and super cool!
This Saturday night at Ritual, Complex and Kapacity present the CMDWN Creative Collective’s own Fiji & Ca$stro Guapo live. The event, hosted by Plug Pope, will also feature music by Teo Nio & Shake as well as Velli Ventura, Kelffy Le Wave & Marico The $hogun.
If you’re up for some loud and heavy music on Saturday night, be sure to check out the Dom. There’s going to be a live show with Ottawa metal band Loviatar, Toronto post hardcore noise rock project Humanities and Ottawa black metal/punk group Black Tower.
The National Capital Region’s favourite soul-steppers, the Mackenzie Rhythm Section, are returning to House of Targ this Saturday night to give their first show of 2016. This time around they’ll be performing live alongside local group The Ven Dreddies. It’s always a good time with both of these local bands!
Over at Babylon this Saturday night, the Offbeat dance party will be taking over the dance floor with DJ Kitty Funk who’ll be playing all kinds of sexy, dirty pop music going back to the turn of the century. This monthly party is always a guaranteed fun night of dancing to guilty pleasures!
