This Wednesday night at Ritual, hip hop heads won’t want to miss NWA’s own DJ Yella. The Straight Outta Compton OG will be in Ottawa for the first time spinning live alongside local DJs RayRay, Jon Deck and So Nice.
The festival formerly known as Folk Fest has reinvented itself into an urban escapade dubbed CityFolk. Along with the new name comes a new central location at Lansdowne Park. This year’s festival will feature headliners Van Morrison, UB40, Of Monsters And Men, Lucinda Williams, Patrick Watson, Wilco and Lisa LeBlanc as well as Lucius, Les Soeurs Boulay, Wintersleep, The Barr Brothers and more. Good things come in threes right? In addition to the new name and site, CityFolk organizers are introducing Marvest, a free musical harvest of local music, food and beverages. Created in an effort to attract festival-goers to local settings along Bank Street, the hope is that people will discover and appreciate the National Capital Region’s music scene and local food-makers. Marvest will feature live performances by over 60 local bands and musicians including The Split, Amos The Transparent, The Strain, Zoo Legacy, Tindervox, The Lionyls, Cody Allen, The Gallop and many more.
Austin garage/rocknrollers OBN III’s will be performing live at the Dominion Tavern this Thursday, September 17. For the occasion, the 12XU Recs signees will be sharing the stage with Ottawa garage/punks Average Times and Ottawa rocknroll band Heavy Traffic.
Ottawa’s The Visit are having their CD Release Show at the Mercury Lounge this Friday, September 18. The celebrate their debut album Through Darkness Into Light, the duo will be joined by Montreal Juno Award-winning ensemble Esmerine, Ottawa acclaimed progressive chamber trio Musk Ox and DJ Adam Saikaley who’ll spin some beats once the live performances are done.
Fresh off the success of his catchy “Sweeterman” single and release of his first full length EP “P2P”, RamRiddlz is set for his debut Ottawa performance this Friday night. The show, happening at Ritual, will also feature music by DJ Matt Tamblyn among others.
Skreedlemania is a 2 day music showcase spanning various genres including surf/psyche instrumental, folk, garage, punk, pop, rock and even some doom/stoner metal. This year’s event, presented as part of Marvest, will feature performances by Monobrow, Audio Visceral, Tara Holloway, Uvula, Outtacontrollers, Banditas and more.
Vancouver indie pop/garage outfit Twin River will be performing live at Raw Sugar Cafe on September 18 as part of their Ontario Tour. The Light Organ Records signees will be playing alongside Hamilton indie rock band Grey Lands.
Kitchen Party is celebrating its 4-year anniversary this Friday night at its new home at Cafe Nostalgica. The monthly dance party presented by DJs Hobo & Sweet Cheeks will feature special guest DJ Memetic of the popular Timekode party as well as AA Wallace of Toronto and visuals by Hard Science. Your hosts promise nothing but the best in funk, soul, disco, hip hop, electro, techno, house and everything in between. A little bit of this and a little bit of that for your dancing pleasure.
The National Capital Region’s fourth annual Nuit Blanche is taking place this Saturday, September 19 at various central locations. This year’s cultural event, which has for theme “Hype”, will once again include select venues in the Hull sector of Gatineau in its programming along with offerings in the Byward Market and downtown core. With a lineup filled with art creations of all sorts, the 2015 edition of Nuit Blanche Ottawa-Gatineau is sure to abound with exciting surprises. Tastes of Wellington West is a free one-day event to thank all those who shop in the neighbourhood, and invite those from across the city and beyond, to come and explore the neighbourhoods of Hintonburg and Wellington Village. Take to the streets this Saturday and check out sidewalk sales, demos, food samples, course registrations, music, kids play zone, Parkdale Market, and all around good times.
This weekend, check out the 5th anniversary at the 2015 Ottawa Pinball & Gameroom show over at Maker Space North. You can purchase games, parts, or gameroom treasures from the Playdium store and Pinball Customs, plus many great used games from local collectors in the vendor booth and flea market areas. Compete in the IFPA sanctioned “O-Town Throw-Down 2015” tournament for IFPA points, cash and prizes, and the bragging rights of being the 2015 Ottawa Pinball Champion! The House of Targ Wizards will be slinging perogies and hot dogs all weekend and CKCU DJs will be on site to provide the tunes.
Chinatown Remixed kicks off this Saturday, September 19 along Somerset West. This annual month-long art festival launches with a day-long vernissage at various locations between Bay and Preston Streets including visual and performance art, music, child-friendly workshops, live food demos and more. A great way to discover or re-discovery Ottawa’s Chinatown neighbourhood!
R.A.P.S.Ody is Ottawa’s only monthly event where urban artists compete in a classic “cypher” hip hop format. Happening at the Flava Factory this Saturday evening, the event will feature cyphers including spoken word artists, rappers, dancers, beatboxers, singers and a live performance by special guest rapper and freestyler Switch who’ll be giving a special set as part of the event.
If you’re craving some indie folk rock this Saturday night and you’re looking for an intimate show, make your way over to Live on Elgin to check out Toronto indie rock band BamBoo who’ll be stopping by Ottawa as part of their Chances Tour. Ottawa lo-fi folk duo Goodnight Boy and Ottawa alternative folk rock singer-songwriter Claude Munson will be joining them on stage for the occasion.
This Saturday night at the Mercury Lounge, resident DJ Trevor Walker presents invited guest DJ Mike Steva. The Australian DJ and Producer will be giving a live set filled with deep soulful and world house music so if you’re looking for a place to go dancing this Saturday, look no further!
This Saturday night, SPOOR presents The Deep End at Ritual. In this 6th instalment, the SPOOR crew bring you a substantial array of techno beats all through the night. As per usual they’ll be staying true to their signature style while bringing a unique experience; intersecting music, lighting and video projection. This is a night for those open to exploring the scenes of techno, house, and electronic music.
Overkill’s Sunday Funday launch party is going down this Sunday afternoon and to mark the new event, musician TJ Morrison will be live on acoustic guitar and DJ Kane B of Ottawa’s Homebased will be taking care of the hip hop and funk beats.
