On Friday, July 26, Ottawa travelled to Brazil with Pedro Quental for a night of live soul music from Rio de Janeiro at the Mercury Lounge. For the occasion, the charismatic Monobloco singer-songwriter was joined on stage by a group of talented Brazilian musicians from Toronto.
Without an opening act, the group, comprised of Pedro Quental, bassist Pedro Joel, electric guitarist Wagner Petrilli, drummer Riquinho Fernandes, percussionist Maninho Costa, and keyboardist Thiago Souza, started the show later than scheduled, but this allowed for a bigger crowd to gather at the venue to enjoy the performance. And a big crowd it was as many local fans of Monobloco, a popular street band from Rio de Janeiro, piled in front of the stage to catch all the action. Most of them sang along to the songs in Portuguese and it really felt as though the audience had been transported to a bar in the heart of Rio for the night.
Quental only addressed the crowd in Portuguese, which made the interaction challenging for English-speakers. However, this allowed for an immersive experience in Brazilian music and culture as each musician played their respective instrument with soul and energy.
Since there were no opening performers, the show was divided into two sets, which gave the group more time and flexibility to perform. Quental and his talented musicians opened their first set with Maneiras after which they continued with Soltinha, Acenda o Farol, Manuel and Sem Compromisso.
By then, the crowd had warmed up to Quental’s sounds and everyone was dancing and singing along to the music. A 30-minute intermission was followed by the second set which featured the songs Ela é Uma Parada, Lamento No Morro, Let’s Stay Together, Taj Mahal, and Fio Maravilha concluding the performance with Pais Tropical to the crowd’s delight.
Despite the language barrier, everyone seemed to have a good time and to enjoy the show as they let Pedro Quental’s contagious sounds transport them to Brazil for a night of live music.
The Brazilian sensation will be stopping by Toronto on August 11 so be sure to catch Pedro Quental and band live at Lula Lounge if you missed their Ottawa gig.
