This past Saturday, September 15, I went to Mavericks to attend a live performance by singer-songwriter Holly McNarland. The Manitoban folk-rock singer with Metis roots stopped by Ottawa for the last show of her Canadian tour to promote her latest album entitled Run Body Run, also the title track inspired by things her daughter said.
The night started with a set by Sara Johnson of Bran Van 3000 who opened the show with her acoustic guitar and casual attitude to warm up the crowd before the main performance took the stage. The singer from Montreal performed songs from her new album Trespassing in front of a small crowd who was starting to gather for Holly McNarland.
It was my first time seeing her and I must say that Holly McNarland is not only an amazing songwriter, she also has a fantastic voice that is just as beautiful when you hear it live. I was pleasantly surprised by her live singing, but a bit annoyed by some of her comments.
She started the show with songs from Run Body Run and continued with a couple from Chin Up Buttercup and Stuff. Holly McNarland unsurprisingly ended the night with Numb, her biggest single, as the crowd sang along to every word of the song. To conclude, she sang a beautifully-executed Beautiful Blue off of the Falcon Beach Soundtrack to everyone’s delight.
All-in-all, it was a great performance by a solid artist!
